Although men who have sex with men remains the major transmission category, high-risk heterosexual transmission now accounts for one-third of new HIV/AIDS cases. The use of syringe-exchange programs has been a key factor in recent declines in HIV infections attributable to injection-drug use. Data for 2006 reflect the most recent statistics available.
