Figure 1. Breakdown of NIAID's 2007 AIDS Research Budget. The total AIDS research budget for the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) was $1.5 billion in 2007. Of this, 33.3% ($497 million) was spent on all vaccine research. The vast majority of vaccine-related funding ($476 million) was spent on AIDS vaccine research and development. A breakdown of this spending is illustrated in the second pie chart.
